We cross the Victorian Border to Lake Cullulleraine and Mildura, then over the Murray/Darling Rivers to Wentworth NSW.
Overnight : Two Rivers Motel - Wentworth
Day 2
After a cooked breakfast, we leave on an adventurous full day trip to explore Mungo National Park. The Park is part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area, Mungo National Park being at its centre. It maintains a continuous record of human occupation stretching back well over 40,000 years. Rain and wind have uncovered ancient fireplaces and hearths, as well as calcified plant matter, artefacts, stone tools and animal bones. At the 33 kilometre long crescent of the Walls of China, erosion has sculptured the sand and clay into dramatic formations. We take a tour through the Park to visit the Mungo woolshed, the Walls of China, the "Grand Canyon",and the ruins of Zanci Station.
Overnight : Two Rivers Motel- Wentworth
Day 3
Five kilometres from Wentworth are the Perry Sandhills - 10 acres of striking red sandhills which, like those near Lake Mungo, were once part of the huge Willandra Lakes System and date back to the ice age 40,000 years ago. After visting these dunes, we go directly to Gaol !! Even though the Old Wentworth Gaol is 120 years old, it maintains an impression that it could be used again tomorrow. If the stories of some of the inmates leave you a litle unsettled, we detour to Stanley Winery on our way to the Mildua Wharf then board the PS Rothbury paddle steamer for a relaxing cruise on the River Murray, travelling through Lock 11. Overnight: Two Rivers Motel- Wentworth
Day 4
We travel to Red Cliffs (home of "Big Lizzy"), along the Calder Highway to the Hattah Kulkyne National Park, where we will experience one of Victoria's most interesting eco-systems. Witness the vegetation change from the stunted growth of the mallee, to riverine flats inhabited by ancient red river gums. The waterbirds have come back to the Lakes of Hattah-Kulkyne after a decade. A new emergency watering regime has seen 6.9 gigalitres oumped into six internationally important wetlands in the Park, prompting the return of the birds in abundance. We visit the Kulkyne Forest and Chalka Creek, returning to Red Cliffs along a track running parallel to the River Murray, and return to Mildura and Wentworth via the Calder Highway.
Overnight : Two Rivers Motel - Wentworth
Day 5 Something different today as we head to Renmark, but this time we take a back road to Lake Victoria and the Rufus River, passing the State Border to Cal Lal, and Rotten Lake. From Renmark we travel the Sturt Highway to Berri, then detour through Loxton to Swan Reach, Walker Flat, Mt Pleasant and Gumeracha to Birdwood. We arrive back in Adelaide approximately 6pm.
